Look out! Nian come. Origin of the Lunar New Year's Eve

In ancient times, in China there are many villages. Every year during the spring, the villagers busy planting rice. In the fall, they harvest the rice. Yields were stored in a barn in preparation for the winter.
Every time winter arrives, the villagers feel very anxious. They are afraid of strange creatures will come to their village. It was horrible creatures. On his head there are five sharp horns. Sharp teeth and nails as well.
These creatures are very strong. If he runs, hills and houses collapsed stepped on. Worse, he likes to catch and eat humans!
The villagers noticed that the creature appears only once a year. He came on New Year's Eve and disappeared right in the middle of the night. The villagers called the creature's Nian, which means the year.
On New Year's Eve, all the villagers locked herself in the house. They pray that they survived the attack Nian.
When the new year arrived and then they dare leave the house. Those who escaped death felt very grateful and were saying, "Gong Xi, Gong Xi! Congratulations Congratulations!"
The villagers held a celebration for fifteen days. After that they started to work and grow rice again. Throughout the year they were busy, but when the New Year almost here, they were back filled with dread.
After many years been a target of Nian, the village people do not take it anymore. They gathered to find a way out.
They want to drive Nian for ever from their village. But how?
There is proposed that the Nian killed. But the proposal was rejected by those who consider Nian as a messenger of God. They fear the Lord be angry if the creature was killed.
The villagers were so confused. They could not reach an agreement. fortunate to have Professor Zhao, scholars in the village. Teacher Zhao expressly says that the Nian was evil beings, not the messenger of God.
"God bless and protect us. God can not possibly send a creature like Nian to kill us," Master Zhao explained. "
"Master Zhao is correct," the villagers agreed. "In order to get rid of Nian," said Professor Zhao, "we must find out, what they fear?" Everyone is thinking hard.
"I met Nian years ago," said the blue-robed man. "But he did not attack me because I wear a red belt." Another experience again, "the story of a man robed in chocolate." Last year I set off firecrackers. Nian apparently afraid to hear the sound, then he fled. "
"I think Nian was afraid of anything that is red," added another man. "Two years ago I put up lanterns and a red cloth over the door of my house. Nian did not invade my home. But he destroyed the neighbors' houses are not protected lanterns and red cloth."
A young man said, "I and my friends dancing lion dance on New Year's Eve. When Nian arrived, we were banging the gong louder. Nian frightened and ran into the woods."
"Now we know what Nian feared," said Professor Zhao. "Nian was afraid of red objects, firecrackers, and the sound of gongs and drums. So from now on, New Year's Eve every home should be put up lanterns and red cloth. Also provides a firecracker. While the young men get ready to dance away Nian B arongsai . "
The villagers went home and got ready. The mothers make red belts for all members of their families. The father put up lanterns and a red cloth over the door of their house. The young people form groups and practicing lion dance beat gongs and drums.
New Year's Eve arrived. Everyone was very excited. They wore headbands or red belts. Fathers carry weapons such as swords, spears, bows and arrows. The children bring firecrackers. They were all ready to drive away Nian.
Now the villagers were no longer afraid of the Nian. They are determined to fight it.
Finally, the long-awaited moment arrived! Nian come! The villagers immediately set off firecrackers. Everything exploded with a deafening sound. Gong and drum beaten loudly. Unsheathed swords and spears ready ditikamkan.
Nian had no idea he would be attacked so suddenly. He groaned in pain as the sword and the spear pierced through his body repeatedly. Moreover, when the rain of arrows hit him. With fear he ran home to his native place.
The villagers are very happy. They sang and danced all night. Gong and drum beaten without ceasing. "Gong Xi! Gong Xi! They congratulated each other with great joy.
Since then, every new year the Chinese people decorate their houses with lanterns and red cloth. They also celebrate the New Year with Lion dances and firecrackers. :)
